What Is a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)?

A CDL is a specialized license validating the skills and training necessary to operate a large commercial vehicle or bus on public roadways in the United States. Texas law states it is a professional driver's license proving that you are trained, tested, and well qualified to operate large, commercial vehicles such as single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 0r more or charter buses with 24 passengers.

The requirements for CDL licensing are stringent, ensuring training and knowledge for the safety of travelers and passengers on public roadways. A CDL license holder is held to higher standards, even when operating privately owned vehicles. Incurring serious traffic violations or multiple speeding tickets can affect the ability to maintain a CDL license or certification.

What types of CDLs are there?

A CDL has three classes: Class A, B, and C. The CDL classification you need will depend on what type and weight of the vehicle you will be operating,

Class A

This license means that the licensee can operate any combination of vehicles with a combined weight of 26,001 or more. If towing a vehicle, the vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) must exceed 10,000 pounds.

Class B

This license means the licensee can operate a vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more. The operator may tow a vehicle as long as the GVWR does not exceed 10,000 pounds GVWR. For passenger vehicles, the licensee is permitted to transport 24 passengers or more, including the driver.

If the skills test is completed with a bus weighing less than 26,001 pounds GVWR, the licensee will be limited to operating buses under a GVWR of 26,001 pounds.

Class C

Permits a licensee to operate a vehicle or combination of vehicles not covered by Class A or B if the vehicle is designed to carry 16 to 23 passengers with the driver. Class C also covers vehicles transporting hazardous materials, with vehicles to be placarded under 49 CFR, Part 172, Subpart F.
